Their movies basically flopped (Cloud Atlas is amazing, but even they had to part-fund it, but Jupiter Ascending is so bad, I don't understand how the script got greenlit), and their TV show got cancelled early too. Then you have how theyвЂ™re edited, how the music and the sound effects just pull you in. The movements, the cameraвЂ™s movements, the lighting, the way space in the frame is used. That Dojo fight is something IвЂ™ve watched I feel thousands of times. The Matrix was truly lightning in a bottle. IвЂ™m glad Reeves is back as well as some of the cast. Was it a good reason? Are they just cashing in because most of their ideas canвЂ™t get the financial backing they need? IвЂ™m wondering what made them want to do a sequel now. So it turns out that everybody including the 'humans' from the original trilogy are in fact machine programs. What if humans won, but instead of killing the machines they put them in a simulation in much the same way the old Star Trek TNG episode did when a hologram became sentient and they tricked him into living in cube that could simulate reality so that he believed he had won his freedom and the main characters get to avoid killing a sentient lifeform. Maybe the machines revive them, maybe they boot up copies of them from the last time they plugged into the Matrix, maybe 'reality' was just another level of control that scooped up the rebellious humans that rejected the first layer of the Matrix.ДЄs for storyline they still have to explore what happens when billions of humans find out they are living in a false reality, hell if they wanted they could go extra wacky and make out that the entire supposed history of the war with humanity was fake. HeartвЂ™s not in it today.Well there are a bunch of ways they can bring almost any character back. I mean, anime is all about big eyes, and RicciвЂ™s the lady you go to for big eyes! Unless youвЂ™re going to Margaret Keane, as portrayed by Amy Adams in the 2014 film Big Eyes! Not my best Big Eyes segue. Truly great casting all around, especially with Christina Ricci. No other movie looks like this! It was very smart of WB to initially look at hiring music video directors for this, but IвЂ™m glad the Wachowskis eventually took it on because thereвЂ™s no one better equipped to make a movie that feels like it takes place in a distinct world that is not our own.Д®mile Hirsch is very cute here in his proto-abuse era! I have no doubt people find Spritle annoying as hell, but I love him. That entire sequence leading into the ice caves is so damn good. And the fight scene on the mountainвЂ¦ holy shit. The plasticky look of the cars works so well in making the race sequences feel like a child playing with Hot Wheels, and the ghost car effect they cribbed straight out of a racing game is a PERFECT touch.

The Wachowskis absolutely understand how to translate a ridiculous anime to a ridiculous live-action piece without making it feel like theyвЂ™re just taking the story and not the entire energy of the original.

They also look like they were a nightmare to shoot! But the rest of it? Unimpeachable.

All those scenes look somewhere between a nauseatingly-saturated mid-2000s boy band music video and a Robert Rodriguez-directed episode of Angela Anaconda. Okay, I do NOT like the way things look when they are outside or surrounded by a lot of people.
